Critical investigation: The different representations of women in action films produced from America

Linked production: A film trailer for a new action film with direct links to women in action films.

Sexism - a representation which is of a bias nature especially against women. an example of this would be a man saying a women can not play football as she is physically weaker than a man. this word relates to ma critical investigation as in my research I will be exploring sexism itself within American action texts.

Feminism - a political movement which challenges values which favour men. this also include post feminism and during my critical investigation I will be looking into to types of feminism
displayed in American action films.

Connotations - this is meaning of an image which is beyond the denotation level. for example an image of a black rose could connote darkness or evil. Connotations will be something that will be looked at during my critical investigation of women in action movies especially during analysis of posters.

Propp's- This was a theorist who said every film text followed the same character fixations which in his eyes were hero, villain, donor, dispatcher, false hero, helper, princess, father. In my case study I will be looking into how women in action films fit into their supposed "princess" role.

Male gaze - this is the males point of view in a text and the camera is usually focused on a women's body parts to attract the male audiences. In my critical investigation I will be looking at to what extend is the male gaze used in action films from America compared to action films used from other parts of the world.
